was established by the Association of Washington Business (AWB) to inspire and aid Washington’s future business leaders.

AWB members created the award to teach the youth of Washington state the role of business in society and to encourage their interests in business as a potential career path.

Don C. Brunell has been a staunch advocate of career and technical education in the state’s K-12, community college and four-year college and university systems. All of these programs have one thing in common; insuring that the Washington business community has a highly skilled and available pool of business leaders to keep Washington state competitive well into the future.


Mission: To inspire, aid and enhance the educational opportunities of future Washington state business leaders.

Vision: To honor the lifetime of achievement and legacy of Don C. Brunell as President of the Association of Washington Business, 1986 – 2014.

Inaugurated: Spring, 2004

AWARD AMOUNT & DISTRIBUTION

Amount: recipients may receive up to $2,000.

Frequency of Award: Annually, provided adequate funds exist and the scholarship administrator determines that qualified recipients have applied.


ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

A student is eligible to apply for the scholarship if they:

  1. Are currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, technical or certificate program at any post-secondary institution (public or private) in or outside the state of Washington or who is currently a senior in high school who will be attending a post-secondary institution within the next 12 months in a business field of study or major.
  2. Have maintained a minimum 3.00 GPA for the past school year.
  3. Are the child or grandchild of an employee of an active member of AWB or the child or grandchild of an employee of AWB and a citizen of the United States or a registered alien.
  4. Submit a signed and completed application that includes:

a) A letter why the applicant is pursuing a career in business and applicants educational plans as they relate to career goals. (Max. two pages of 11pt. type.)

b) A list of all school/community activities or accomplishments indicating positions of leadership.

c) A brief description of employment and volunteer experience. (Max. one page of 11pt. type.)

d) Two current (less than six months old) letters of recommendation from teachers, clergy, employers or others than family members who are familiar with the applicant’s skills, abilities and character.

All written responses to the application will be judged on originality, grammar, spelling, composition and clarity of thought. Applications will be assigned a score based upon the following point distribution:

Academic Merit (GPA) 10 points
Recommendations 10 points
School & Community Involvement 15 points
Work & Volunteer Experience 20 points
Language Skills 20 points
General Appearance of Package 10 points
Washington Business Week Bonus 15 points
