Washington State Makes Money Available for Employee Training

Many Washington businesses need help in training newly hired or incumbent workers with new skills and practices. Washington’s thirty-four community & technical colleges can help your business get the employee training it needs to be competitive. Programs are available to help you cover the costs of employee training when you partner with a community/ technical college. There are currently two employer grant and loan programs available to assist your business and your employees.

Tax Credit and Deferred Payment:
Customized Training Program (CTP)

Engage in customized training with a college, add new jobs in Washington, and get a state Business & Occupation (B&O) tax credit equal to 50% of the training cost as you repay the cost of training. Your business is eligible for the Customized Training Program if:

  • You are a Washington State B & O taxpayer
  • You provide employment opportunities in Washington
  • You are able to contract with community/ technical college for short-term, customized skill training

Visit Customized Training Program website for full details. Contact the training coordinator at your nearest community or technical college to discuss your specific training needs. Working with you, the college will submit an application to the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) for the grant or loan.

Grant Money:
Job Skills Program (JSP)

Apply with a community or technical college for grant-funded training to help your business remain competitive. Funds are awarded through a competitive application process. JSP dollars pay half the cost of the training project and the business provides cash or in-kind match to cover the other half.   Your business is eligible to apply for the Job Skills Program if:

  • You are a Washington employer
  • Your business is in need of assistance for employee training for the purpose of remaining competitive in the marketplace
  • Your employees need skill training to ensure or improve their employability
  • You can provide dollar-for-dollar match of all grant funds
  • You can engage in short term customized skill training with a community/ technical college or private career or technical college.

Visit Job Skills Program for full details. Contact the training coordinator at your nearest community or technical college to discuss your specific training needs. Working with you, the college will submit an application to the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) for the grant or loan.
